The day starts out by picking up the charter guest at the local boat ramp. We will go over some safety information, sign a liability waiver, and then we are off for a short boat ride to the scalloping grounds. Once we arrive, everyone will be setup with snorkeling gear. Everyone jumps in to the clear shallow water and starts the “Easter egg hunt”. Except we are looking for scallops instead of eggs. Once everyone gets there limit (2gallons) of scallops per person or time runs out, we will head back to the boat ramp.
Scalloping is a fun family activity for all ages that involves snorkeling on top of the water while scanning the grass flats to locate these delicious shellfish. Scalloping usually takes place in 3 ft to 6 ft depth range depending on the tide, making it a relaxing activity for everyone to do. Once you spot a scallop, you simply dive down, pick it up, and place it into your scallop bag. Not only are bay scallops fun to gather, but they are delicious to eat! Snorkelers will also enjoy viewing a variety of fish, sea turtles, crabs, and other marine life.
Try to lay flat on the surface of the water and don't stand up. Look straight down not out in front of you. Move slow through the water scanning back and forth.
Look for the rugged shell outline and blue eyes at the base of the sea grass.
Travel into the tide so you can see directly down the grass to the base of the grass
Once you find one scallop, search that same area for others, there usually are many more very close by. If you see brown sea moss on top of the grass look close scallops love to hang out in this brown sea moss.
Keep your Snorkeling mask as fog free as possible. The better you can see the more scallops you will find. Catching scallops is quite simple once you know what you’re looking for. People tend to swim over them without realizing what they are after is right below them! The key to a successful scalloping is to swim slowly lying flat on the surface of the water and scan the grass below moving your head back and forth. Be sure not to stand up as it will muddy the bottom making it more difficult to see.
